Subtitled A Book for Obsolete Children, this unusual item in the Seuss canon doesn't really belong among the children's books. Written to celebrate the nonsense master's 82nd birthday, it follows "you" (an elderly gent in a suit and white moustache) through a physical check-up in some fiendish geriatric clinic. You are measured, prodded, and subjected to all the medical indignities familiar and unfamiliar to the elderly. "You must see Dr. Pollen, our Allergy Whiz, who knows every sniffle and itch that there is... He will check your reactions to thumbtacks and glue, catcher's mitts, leaf mould, and cardigans too. Nasturtiums and marble cake, white and blue chalks, anthracite coal and the feathers of hawks." It's clear that the process is going to be long, but much shorter than the bill. The blurb on the back says it all: "Is this a children's book? Well... not immediately. You buy a copy for your child now and you give it to him on his 70th birthday." Yes and NoBy Susie
Upon recommendation of other Amazon reviewers, I bought this as a retirement gift. It would probably be better for someone experiencing health problems - routine, not serious ones. It is very clever in the writing and I may purchase one again for the appropriate situation.

Our Pastor loved this book!By Lodena A. Benak
Our Pastor turned 60 this year and as we gathered to celebrate we also presented him with some useful "gag" gifts - over the hill golf balls and golf tees, over the hill survival knife, etc. But the most well received gift was this book by Dr. Seuss - even though it is quite long we had one of our congregation read it out loud to everyone - we wanted them to get a feel for what the book is about! It was so fun to share it together. Our Pastor re-read the book once he got home. He really, really liked the book. I was looking for tasteful, useful, funny "gag" gifts - and this book was exactly that! I highly recommend this book! Way to go, again, Dr. Seuss!

Fantastic Read!By Patricia A.
I purchased 4 copies of "You're Only Old Once", by Dr. Seuss, as birthday gifts for dear friends who were celebrating 70th birthdays. We all read Dr. Seuss books to our children many years ago as they now do with our grandchildren. We read this book together as we laughed at his invented, rhyming prose, and poked fun at the medical community we all experience as we age. We are all "obsolete children" for sure, buy this book and save it until you are 70!
